Anger is a natural emotion that every human experiences. It has survival benefits and originates from our instinctive "fight or flight" response. It triggers an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and levels of adrenaline and non-adrenaline. When a person decides to take action to confront a threat, anger becomes the pre-dominant feeling and takes over our behaviour, cognition and phsiology.

However, in modern society, there is rarely a physical threat to our existance, so the old fashioned "fight or flight" response can be inappropriate. More commonly nowadays, anger occurs in response to an emotional hurt or percieved emotional threat. It can occur when we think we have been injured, mistreated, ignored, when our deeply held views are opposed or when we are prevented from achieveing our personal goals. To begin solving the problem of anger in our lives we first need to accept it in our mind, acknowledge how it is harming our lives and relationships and apply techniques to reduce the anger in our lives and work towards eliminating it as much as possible. Anger management teaches you to recognise your frustrations early on and uses techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy to learn to change your behaviours and responses to these situations.
